Starting with the 2018-19 season, the DFL revealed exciting new IPP (International Product Portfolio) features, designed to further boost the IPP utilisation for Bundesliga licensees and broadcasting partners world-wide. The IPP is the entirety of DFL’s internationally offered audiovisual products. It is geared to provide DFL’s broadcast and media partners with state of the art audio-visual products and services. “Focus: Tomorrow” will cover the newly added components in a series of three articles. This first part of the series focuses on enhanced player and team statistics and graphics as well as the new Commentary Live Tool. Future editions will highlight augmented reality elements along with localized clips (part 2) and UHD matches (part 3) respectively.
Data-driven storytelling is the goal towards which the improved player and team statistics and graphics packages have been geared. With more than 60 licensees around the world relying on receiving complete, fully edited and comprehensively produced Bundesliga matches from the DFL and its subsidiaries, supplying interesting, tailor-made content through the world feed that goes way beyond matchday footage is paramount. One of the goals is highlighting international Bundesliga players’ contributions that are of particular interest to the targeted audiences in foreign markets.
Numerous new graphic elements and statistics provide engaging information for both commentators, studio hosts, and audiences throughout the duration of the broadcast. A chart depicting a particularly interesting fact or statistic kicks off the information flow before the start of each match, followed by a so-called warm-up statistic that emphasises a certain player’s data (such as number of goals scored, average kilometres run per game, and so on) during their warm up. During the half-time break, graphic charts will provide a comparison of both teams while also comparing the performance of two players (one per team). Pre-match graphics also include a weather report chart. With growing global interest in Bundesliga contests, providing information about the current climate conditions at the respective match stadiums carries additional value for football fans in different parts – and different climate zones – of the world.
All the newly provided graphics and statistics are designed to provide ample talking points for both broadcasters and their TV audiences. The Commentary Live Tool has been designed to be the new data cornucopia for international broadcast partners who opt to provide their own commentators instead of or in addition to the English commentary provided within the world feed. As of the beginning of the 2018-19 season, more than 100 international TV analysts have benefited from this option.
With the help of the Commentary Live Tool, commentators are able to gain online access to formation and line-up information and a live ticker with all relevant match data. Also included is the “video assist information” that gives access to a highly transparent depiction of all referee decisions supported by the video assistant, thus ensuring commentators can keep their audiences up-to-date with crucial or disputed on-pitch decisions. The Commentary Live Tool is available in English.
Available both in English and Spanish, the Bundesliga Official Match Data Portal is another pillar of the IPP’s match data-driven storytelling stock. The fully customisable portal is the official match data search engine for Bundesliga broadcasting partners and gives access to constantly updated match and season statistics and features, brimming with 100% data accuracy.
