“Alexa, play HSVnetradio!”
As the first German sports club to introduce a dedicated Amazon Echo Skill, the Hamburger SV has demonstrated pioneering instincts in November 2016, not just across the Bundesliga landscape, but across professional sports globally: In late 2017, U.S. major sports leagues followed the Bundesliga club’s example, when the Washington Capitals were the first National Hockey League team to launch their own Skill. A glance at the recent as well as the projected global growth development in the Amazon Echo market proves just how future-oriented the HSV’s initiative has been. The numbers almost boggle the mind.
The Amazon Echo is the leading voice-activated smart speaker, and its various products dominate the field. The technology was introduced in Germany in late 2016, and the acceptance rate here has been growing quickly. In fact, Digital Voice Assistance (DVA) is one of the leading growth markets in the digital field, and Skills – such as the HSV’s – are an important factor that accelerates the technology’s increasing popularity.
Skills are essentially applications that customize the DVA to the individual user’s wishes. With the installation of the HSV Skill, for example, Alexa can now access current news from the club’s website, keep the user up-to-date on the latest player transfers, and offers access to the free HSVnetradio broadcasts.
The Skills market has seen impressive growth: As of January 2018, there were more than 3,000 German-language Skills available for download on Amazon, up from mere hundreds a year before. And the numbers will grow globally: based on finding from the 2018 Accenture Digital Consumer survey across 19 countries, one third of the online population in countries such as China, the US, Brazil and Mexico will own a DVA device by the end of 2018. An exciting perspective for the HSV and other clubs considering the increasing interest from abroad in Bundesliga entities. As the technology progresses, the HSV fully intends to stay at the forefront of the DVA technology, and the club is committed to improving and expanding the HSV Skill.
